Banners at the First Woman Suffrage Parade -- Boone, IA, October 29, 1908

As reported in the Boone News Leader on October 31, 1908:

SUFFRAGISTS PARADE STREETS
------------------------
HUNDREDS IN LINE THIS NOON
LED BY MISS SHAW.
--------------------
SHE DELIVERS STIRRING OPEN AIR ADDRESS.
---------------------
The Two Suffragettes From London,
the Center of Much Interest, ---
Many Banners and Flags Dis-
played in the Parade
--------------------

[Well, here are some of them]

Among the banners carried were seen the following inscriptions:

"Like the daughters of Zelophehad
we ask for our Inheritance
"

"We are citizens and voters under this flag"

"Criminals, idiots and children vote, Women can not vote"

"Let the Iowa Women Free"

"Political Alliance, Not Defiance"

"We have knocked at Iowa's door for 37 years. Is it not time it opened"

"Aliens in our own country. We want to be naturalized"

"Taxation without representation is tyranny. As true now as in 1776"

"The evils of Democracy are cured by more Democracy. Let the women vote"

"For the long work day,
For the taxes we pay,
For the laws we obey,
We want something to say."

The suffragettes carried a banner reading, "Women should vote on equal terms with men. Taxation without representation is tyranny"

The first ladies in line carried, just ahead of Miss Shaw, a banner reading "Welcome to Anna Shaw."
