The church in Janosfalva
was built in 1492 as a Catholic Church. In 1537, the king of
Transylvania declared the whole country to be Unitarian.
The Community & People:
The population of Janosfalva is 300, mostly
farmers. Even the minister farms - the church has 40 acres
under cultivation. Crops are wheat, corn and hay. The
ethnic background and first language is Hungarian. Janosfalva
is the village's Hungarian name. It also has a Romanian name,
Ionesti (pronounced yo NESHT). Both names mean John's Woods. Since
there are many towns named "John's Woods", this one
is known by the nearby river and has the full name Homorodjanosfalva. |
