Welcome to First Unitarian Church of Des Moines

"We welcome you " say our Greeters

Welcome to First Unitarian of Des Moines.  We are glad you have chosen to visit with us on our web page.  We would like to extend an invitation to attend one of our services and or programs.
This page and the links connected to it have been designed to answer any questions you may have as a visitor to our church.  It can also serve to guide you through the process as you decide if ours is the right spiritual home for you.
If at any time you have any questions, please feel free to contact our Membership Coordinator, Lori Emison Clair at membership@ucdsm.org or via phone at 453-2999.

Considering membership?

In order to assist you as you are deciding if this is the right place for you we have a number of events for you to get to know us better.  None of these events are mandatory they are available should you choose to attend.
Generally each event is held three times throughout the year.  See membership calendar for specific dates and times.
Please RSVP to Lori Emison Clair at Membership@ucdsm.org or 453-2999.  Let us know if you will need childcare, and we will gladly provide it.

Get Acquainted Gatherings

Recent guests of our church are encouraged to join Reverend Mark Stringer, Religious Education Director Joan McDonald, and church members for an informal reception with hors d'oeuvres and beverages.

Exploring Membership Class

Have you been visiting for a while and want to learn more about our church? Join us on Saturday morning as we discuss what UU's believe. We'll also review the 7 principles, learn a little local UU history, review our church structure, and discuss the wide variety of ways to get involved in our community.

New Member Ceremony

During the regular Sunday service you and other new members join the congregation in a responsive reading, will sign the membership book, receive a few gifts, and be officially welcomed into the church.

“Connections Dinner” For Families with Children In The RE Program

This is a potluck dinner designed to connect new families with families already in the church RE program.  This is a great opportunity to allow the children to get to know other children who will be in their Religious Education classrooms.

Membership Process

When you decide to become a member of the church, it will be a big moment for you and for us.
We have a responsibility to see that you are welcomed and that you find a place in our midst where you can make friends and continue your spiritual journey.
In return, we ask four things of you:

  1. Presence - Attend church services and programming on a regular basis (regular basis is what is comfortable for you)
  2. Participation - Get involved in the life of our community in ways that grow your soul.  Sing in the choir, join a small group, teach a class, serve on a committee, be a youth advisor, provide music for a service, work with others on a social action project…the possibilities are unlimited!
  3. Pledging - Make and pay a regular pledge of financial support.
  4. Pass It On - Share your pride in our religious community by talking to people about our church.

How Do I Join?

When you have decided you are ready to join, please complete the Membership packet including the Intention to Join form, Giving Ministry form, and the Pledge form.  Return to Lori Emison Clair at least one week prior to the new member ceremony
