Interweave is an
active and vibrant GLBT group of First Unitarian Church. We
receive substantial church support and work to meet our obligations.
Our group meets at least monthly and coordinates a variety
of activities within the church. We appreciate all
members and friends who take the time to provide their input
and ideas.
Interweave serves
three primary purposes:
- provide social interaction for gay, lesbian,
bisexual, transgender people and allies
- publicize the church to the greater Des
Moines GLBT community and anyone seeking a liberal
religious environment
- help the church further its goal of supporting
social justice
We are a part of Interweave
Continental, an affiliate of the Unitarian Universalist
Association, and a national network of Interweave groups.
Each year, we sponsor a variety of church
activities, including a church service, educational forums,
and the church's participation in the Des Moines Pride Parade,
of which our church is one of the largest participants.
If you are a member of the church and would
like to provide input, or are new to the church
and would like to find out more about the church or
Interweave, please
contact or Mark Metz at scorpiored48@yahoo.com. Watch the Intercom and/or order of service for details.

Monthly Events/Socials:
2009:
Interweave Forum
June 7, 10:30 a.m. Conference Room
The Interweave Forum is presented by Jen Harvey, Assistant Professor of Religion & Ethics.
With the defeat of marriage equality in California, deeply racialized language emerged. This language ranged from accusations that African Americans were responsible for the defeat of same-sex marriage, to claims that "gay is the new black." Queer people of color quickly denounced what they saw as continued racism in the LGBT community. Some even called the fight for marriage equality a white issue. What became clear is that racial divides among queer people remain as painful and strong as they do in society as a whole.
What lessons does California offer for thinking again about the connections between racism and heterosexism? What about the problem of white privilege among LGBT folks? And, how should we understand and struggle for equality in order for a truly inclusive and liberating vision of justice to emerge?
