Senator Harkin Outlines Plans for Conservation Security Act

Federal spending for soil conservation today is just a fraction of what it was 60 years ago, when the conservation   movement was young, the nation was just emerging from the Depression, and a dollar was worth several times its value today.  But while we're pouring billions upon billions yearly into the farm economy, we're continuing to let conservation slide, says Senator Tom Harkin, D-Ia.

In a meeting at First Unitarian Church on august 10, Harkin outlined his proposed Conservation Security Act, intended to link farm payments with conservation efforts--not just to induce more conservation, but to reward farmers who have long used sound soil- and water-saving methods.

The meeting was organized by the Iowa Environmental Council, a consortium of 78 organizations (including First Unitarian).  Close to 100 farmers and environmentalists attended.
