The book, Authentic Selves (the UUA Common Read), is more than an introduction to gender identity. It will be useful to those seeking to promote our shared values: our places within an interdependent web of existence; the inherent worth and dignity of all people, whatever their identity or life experiences; and justice and compassion in how we treat one other and ourselves. With love at the center, it will encourage participants to better understand others, and in this way encourage our own spiritual growth.
So often trans and nonbinary people’s stories are told only through the lens of their struggles and challenges, including their political battles for legal rights, but trans and nonbinary people live rich and fulfilling lives full of joy and community too. Authentic Selves: Celebrating Trans and Nonbinary People and Their Families is a sweeping compilation of life stories and portraits of trans and nonbinary people, as well as their partners, parents, children, siblings, and chosen family members.
Rev. Garmon plans to preach about this topic in May and we will meet once on Zoom in the first week of April, in advance of our Forum on Authentic Selves with Rev. Garmon on May 25.
