First Unitarian offers visitors, friends and members a multitude of opportunities to connect with others in our faith community. Whether you’re part of a weekly hospitality team, join with others over shared interests through one of our Affinity and Activity Groups, serve the church by being on a committee, or attend a Fabulous Fun Food Fair event, we have something to help you connect with others outside of Sunday services. See below or the links on this page for more details.

Affinity and Activity Groups – a variety of groups that meet on a monthly or bi-weekly basis to share a meal with one another, have fun doing an activity, get to know others on a deeper level (or all of the above!). If you’re interested in creating and promoting a group, click here.

Wednesday Night Programming – Dinnertime on Wednesdays (September – May) brings a gathering of members and friends of all ages to First Unitarian. Enjoy a buffet-style dinner prepared by volunteer guest chefs. These multi-generational evenings of food and fellowship are accompanied by a variety of programming for children and youth. Childcare is available for little ones under age five. To receive detailed information about what’s happening on Wednesdays, subscribe to our Wednesday Programming email.

Hospitality Ministry – One of the simplest but most essential ways we create a Beloved Community together is by being intentional about how we welcome one another into our church, and providing a comfortable and enjoyable environment for everyone. Hospitality teams serve about once every 2 months, and are responsible for greeting, ushering, and providing treats during coffee hour.

Music Ministry – Nothing moves the heart and spirit like music. At First Unitarian Church, we are blessed by music, lifting us up individually while joining us in community. Music opportunities include the Bell Avenue Ringers, UU Singers, and musicians performing in Sunday services.

Caring Ministry – Caring Ministry is all about community and how we in our church can be of service to each other. This ministry is shared by our professional staff, lay leaders, a pastoral team of volunteers, and potentially, everyone who is a part of First Unitarian Church. Forms for submitting a Joy or Concern, request caring assistance, or offering to provide caring assistance are available via the Caring Ministry web page.

Committees, Councils and Ministries – First Unitarian Church is a vibrant community that benefits from dedicated volunteers who help things run smoothly by serving on groups who focus on an area of our church. These groups include Religious Services Celebrants, Council for Congregational Ministries, Faith Formation Council, the Faith in Action Coordinating Team, the Art Gallery Committee, A/V Team, Concerts Committee, Grounds Council, and Memorial Reception Committee.

Progressive Voices Concert Series – The Progressive Voices Concert Series is hosted by First Unitarian Church of Des Moines and is open to the general public. Our goal is to bring nationally and internationally- known performers to Central Iowa who can connect with a wide audience by presenting music that promotes compassion for and celebration of the universal human condition in all its forms and variations. Click here to learn about this year’s line-up of musical guests.

Board of Trustees – the Board of Trustees is composed of 9 members from the congregation and are responsible for the governance of the church. The board meets monthly on the second Thursday at 5:30 pm.

Fabulously FUN Food Faith FUNdraiser – an annual fundraiser at First Unitarian offers opportunities to gather with one another for food, fun and conversation through events, as well as a silent auction for homemade foods. All money raised goes to First Unitarian. Some events still have seats available – click here to check out the complete list of events with open seats.
