January Board Highlights

During its January 16 monthly meeting the Board of Trustees focused on how to implement its goals for the remainder of the church year, the means by which our church will promote its new mission and vision statements, and voted to support the staff recommendation to contract with Pushpay, a church payment and communications vendor.
The Board’s goals include:
1. To be more welcoming to all as evidenced by:
  • Increased attendance at services;
  • Create a congregational baseline for sense of satisfaction and welcome at First Unitarian; and,
  • Address all concerns made by the Accessibility Team including the signage, sound equipment, updated chair lift, ramp to stage.
2. Increase engagement by members and friends as evidenced by:
  • Increased programming and events offered through the church; and,
  • Increased participation at these events.
3. Increase congregational visibility in community action as evidenced by:
  • Attendance at community actions;
  • Contributions to social justice organizations; and,
  • Media engagement.
A key step by the Board in pursuing these goals will be creation of a very short survey (likely no more than 2 questions) church members may complete to help the Board get a baseline for member satisfaction. Look for that in coming weeks.
Additionally, Reverend Shaw reported on steps they and staff will take to bring the new church mission and vision statements more prominently into the life of our church. (Those statements were included in the Board Update for December printed in the January 10 Intercom). Rev. Amy has already been incorporating them into sermons and service readings and the mission statement, in particular, will also appear in church signs and banners.
The church will contract with Pushpay, a vendor specializing in church communications and giving. One of its key features is an app that folks can use to more easily donate to the church, The app will also greatly enhance the ability of First Unitarian to communicate with its members by, for example, sending out notices via the app of church weather closings.
Board meeting minutes are more detailed than these Highlights and are usually available about three weeks after each Board meeting on the “Connect” drop-down menu on the church website under “Board of Trustees” and “Board Business.” They become official when approved at the next Board meeting. The next Board meeting will be at 6:00 pm on Thursday, February 20 in Channing Hall. You are all welcome and encouraged to attend.
