Book Study Groups
Undocumented: How Immigration Became Illegal, by Aviva Chomsky. Motivated by the growing numbers of migrants entering the United States via the Mexico border, this course is designed to help us reflect on historic patterns of migration, the role the United States has played (and still plays) in Latin America, and how we might engage meaningfully with immigration reform.
To prepare for the first session, please read the Preface, Introduction, and first two chapters of Undocumented.

October 1 – Harvest of Empire: The Untold Story of Latinos in America (2012) – a 90-minute documentary based on the book Harvest of Empire: A History of Latinos in America written by journalist Juan Gonzalez.
October 22 – Who is Dayani Cristal? (2014) 85 minutes. An anonymous body in the Arizona desert sparks the beginning of a real-life human drama. The search for identity leads us back across a continent to seek out the people left behind and the meaning of a mysterious tattoo. Starring Gael Garcia Bernal, this film has been described by The Hollywood Reporter as “A deeply moving doc [which] finds a new way of making the immigration debate personal.”
Each film will start promptly at 6:00. Popcorn & juice offered. Discussion will follow each film.

This is a 4-session study course using a previously recorded webinar from AFSC.
