The Immigration Committee wants the whole congregation to share in the praise our church received recently from the Des Moines Latinx community. In Al Exito’s year-end newsletter, they published the following article. Our congregation’s work has contributed to one of our church’s stated goals: To reach out to the wider community.
Here is the article:
First Unitarian Church Special Allies of Al Éxito
A few years ago, the first Mary Campos Scholarship Luncheon was hosted by the First Unitarian Church. On their own, the church arranged for volunteers to help on the day of the event. Since then, congregation members have blessed Al Éxito and its students in countless ways.
Many church members have participated in uplifting Al Éxito through social justice work and financial support, and by becoming board members, sponsors, and volunteers. Also, individuals have served as Mary Campos Champions, raising funds for the scholarships.
This year, they worked together as a team under the church banner. The team was led by Gene McCracken, Dave Witke, Barbara Royal, Ellen Taylor, and Harvey Harrison, who are some of the best community allies for the fundraiser and for whenever a volunteer or expert is needed. And again this year the team was top fundraiser in the Champions fund drive. Darce Vandegrift and Victor Tonelli are two other members of the congregation who are important parts of the Al Éxito family, giving so much of their time and expertise to programs, operations, and participants.
It has truly been a heartfelt blessing to have such great support and love from all of you at the First Unitarian Church. Thank you!
