We’re in the early stages of forming a First Unitarian team to support one or more asylum seekers! What is absolutely clear is that the more people who get involved, the easier this will be for everyone. Please join the conversation at our next meeting:
Sunday, July 14 ~ 11:15 a.m., in the Mary Safford Room. All are welcome!
In addition: On Tuesday, July 16 at 6:30 p.m. we have the opportunity to have a ‘Zoom’ meeting with Rev. Dottie Matthews, Affiliated Community Minister with the UU Church of Columbia, MO.
Dottie is a volunteer with a program (now called the Asylum Sponsorship Program) that emerged from a collaborative effort between SURJ (Showing Up for Racial Justice), ILL (Innovation Law Labs) and FFI (Freedom for Immigrants), and they help match up asylum seekers with volunteer sponsors across the country. She worked on this program for a year helping vet individual sponsors and now has moved into helping congregations become sponsors as a group. Congregational sponsorship works very well because the large number of people on the team can help spread out the many tasks and forms of support that are needed and that allows congregations to support groups, especially families. The congregation where she is affiliated, for instance, is sponsoring a family of four (2 parents and 2 kids). She says she’s looking forward to sharing what she is learning and to discuss if this might be right for First Unitarian.
Please mark your calendars for this important event that will help us move forward with our efforts!
We still plan to have our regular team meeting on Sunday, July 14 at 11:15 in Mary Safford.
