Tai Chi

Tai chi is an ancient form of gentle exercise sometimes called ‘moving’ meditation. This class will focus on a short form (Sun style) designed specifically to improve joint movement (which may decrease pain) and improve balance and prevent falls. In addition to these benefits, research has also shown tai chi may reduce stress. Basic aspects of tai chi will be discussed and practiced, including breathing, weight shift, posture, slow circular movements, elongation and focus to enhance the flow of chi. The classes are taught by repetitively practicing small portions and gradually adding until the entire form has been covered. Regular attendance is encouraged for the full benefit. There is modest fee for participants.

Day session: Mondays and Thursdays at 9:30am. Outside sessions during warm months are held at the American Legion Park in West Des Moines on 4th and Vine.
During cold months we meet indoors at First Unitarian Church.

Tai Chi at First Unitarian Church

I am offering two opportunities for new and returning tai chi students this fall.

Beginning October 7, Mondays and Thursdays, 9:30 a.m.–10:10 a.m. (40–minute session), for six weeks, we will be learning Tai Chi for Health, a set of movements that incorporate traditional tai chi principles and are easy and enjoyable to learn. Participants of all ages and abilities are welcome. Chairs will be available for those who prefer seated exercise.

Introductory one-time session: Saturday, November 2, 10:30 am – 11:30 am. This session is a fun way to sample some tai chi movements and tai chi walking, a moving meditation.

Tai Chi also continues to meet every Monday and Thursday. Experienced students may join the beginner’s class to deepen their tai chi experience by focusing on a tai chi principle, such as loosening joints, spiral movement, breathing, posture, or resistance. Then, stay for a 40-minute session beginning at 10:10 a.m. This second session will include tai chi for health, yang 10 and 24, and Qigong.

Other than when offering teaching sessions, tai chi continues to meet to practice and share. The regular time for this group is 9:30 a.m.–10:30 a.m. on Mondays and Thursdays.
