Building, Grounds and Rentals

Building and Grounds

First Unitarian Church of Des Moines is a striking example of mid-20th-century modernist architecture, nestled amid a serene and green setting. Its low, angular profile is characterized by clean lines and minimalist design, exuding a sense of openness and intentionality. The building is primarily constructed of natural stone and glass, blending harmoniously with its surroundings.

The façade features expansive glass panels, allowing natural light to pour into the interior and offering glimpses of the warm, inviting spaces within. A gently sloping roofline and geometric elements contribute to the building’s distinctive aesthetic, reflecting the Unitarian Universalist ethos of simplicity and connection to the natural world.

The entrance is welcoming, marked by a modest yet elegant canopy and framed by well-maintained landscaping, including native plants and neatly arranged pathways. Inside, the sanctuary is a spacious, airy room with high ceilings, wooden beams, and a focus on functionality. Rows of chairs or pews face a central area for worship, surrounded by understated décor that prioritizes community and reflection.

The grounds include a mix of open spaces and gardens, enhancing the tranquil atmosphere. The church is both a spiritual and community hub, with thoughtful architectural choices that reflect its values of inclusivity, harmony, and sustainability.

The Sculpture—Illusional Chasm

We are proud of our past and of the work of our foremothers in supporting this church and in furthering social justice in the community. The installation and dedication of the sculpture Illusional Chasm at the front of our church reminds us of the debt we owe those courageous women and their male supporters who marched for women’s suffrage, for equal rights for all and for peace and justice. Illusional Chasm reminds us of the work before us to make peace and justice a reality in our community and in our world.

Auditorium

The auditorium is a versatile and welcoming space designed to accommodate a wide range of gatherings and events. With seating for up to 260 people, the room features an open layout that can be adapted for worship services, concerts, lectures, and community meetings.

Natural light filters through large windows, creating a serene and uplifting atmosphere, while the neutral color palette and modern design elements provide a sense of elegance and simplicity. The stage area, equipped with professional audio-visual capabilities, ensures that both performers and speakers can engage effectively with the audience.

Comfortable seating and excellent acoustics make the space ideal for musical performances or intimate ceremonies. Whether you’re seeking a space for spiritual reflection, artistic expression, or collaborative work, the auditorium offers a flexible and inclusive environment.

Classrooms

The classroom spaces at First Unitarian Church of Des Moines provide a welcoming and adaptable environment for learning, discussion, and community engagement. Designed to accommodate a variety of group sizes and activities, these rooms are perfect for religious education classes, workshops, small group meetings, and creative projects.

Memorial Garden

Our Memorial Garden is a special place where members may honor loved ones or find a peaceful place for the interment of cremated remains. Located on the east side of the church building, the garden features a selection of native plants and lush greenery. A stone and granite walkway leads visitors to a circular center, a lovely site for weddings, memorial services or quiet meditation.

A plaque displayed near the garden lists the names of those interred. We also invite you to purchase an engraved memorial brick or granite paver to place in the garden to honor a loved one, celebrate a milestone or commemorate a contribution to the garden. Please review our Memorial Garden Use Policy for more details.

For guidance planning a memorial service, funeral or celebration of life, please see When a Loved One Dies.

To reserve the Memorial Garden for an event, to purchase a memorial brick or granite paver, or to inquire about interment, please contact the Church Administrator, at admin@ucdsm.org.
